The Great Unmasking

The Great Unmasking aims to break the silence about eating disorders and body image concerns in cultures and communities were these issues are still a costly taboo.

We don’t want anyone experiencing these issues to suffer in silence - and alone. When don’t have to pretend that everything is OK when in reality it is NOT. These issues can have destructive consequences for sufferers and those who care about them.

It is time for us to end this maladaptive ostrich behaviors. The Great Unmasking do so by raising awareness in cultures and environments where eating disorders and body image issues are still being ignored, overlooked, or even promoted, supporting everyone to raise its voice, action, and dare to care.

Our Vision

The Great Unmasking engages us in the debate around our relationship with our body, appearance and “looks”, exploring the tension between the dependence of our society on social recognition and perfection, and the costs of those on our mental health - and humanity as whole.

The Great Unmasking is subversive in that it will tackle concepts such as "Freedom", "Beauty", or "Success". The word ‘subversive’ is both intentional and ironic. The project focuses on how hollow promises to help us achieve our social, economic and aesthetic potential are disingenuous, relying as they do on a systematic dismantling of agency and self-worth.

Ultimately, the Great Unmasking brings light to how the religion of thinness and slenderness, under the promise of beauty perfection, is instead spreading the cult of “starving perfection”.
